Welcome to Paradise

Every major Firefox update is referred to by a code name during its pre-release period. The names come from major parks around the world…Firefox 1.5 was Deer Park, Firefox 2 was Bon Echo, and Firefox 3 is Gran Paradiso.

Gran Paradiso is well underway, of course, so it’s time to give it a visual identity of its own (for comparison, here’s the Bon Echo identity). The name evokes images of travel from an earlier, more glamorous era so we decided to center our campaign around a vintage travel theme.

The first step was to bring our fictional place called Gran Paradiso to life in the form of a poster by artist Steve Forney. The final art is below (makes Gran Paradiso look like a pretty pleasant place to hang out, if you ask me)…we’ve printed up posters, created desktop wallpaper and are planning other surprises for the next few months.

One really important thing to keep in mind is that this is strictly an internal campaign, meaning it’s purely for the enjoyment of everyone in the Mozilla community who’s working on the Gran Paradiso project. It’s most definitely not intended to be promotional or customer-facing in any way.

So, without further ado, welcome to Gran Paradiso (click for a larger image):

Actually, it’s not a fictional place

Just to be clear, I meant that *this* Gran Paradiso is a fictional place. We wanted to create our own little world, rather than use the real place as a strict guide.

They look awesome. A couple of suggestions:
- Could it be delivered as a png to avoid image degradation? It is particularly noticeable in the sea, the palm leaves and the red letters.
- Could the title and phrase we in the upper border? In Windows, most of the title is hidden by the task bar. I’ve remixed it for myself but feel free to publish it if it makes sense.

Thanks. I also looked at the other Steve Forney posters and they all look very nice.

Just to clarify: the suggestion to move the title is for the wallpapers.

The remixed wallpaper (1440 x 900) is here:

Actually Gran Paradiso is park in the Italian Alps, not some place in a south island or a mexican-like place;

The problem is that now people will start to believe that Gran Paradiso is a bay somewhere in Mexico.
Maybe, even if not the real mountain, an alpine style “Paradiso” would have fitted both: the reality, and the need to make something appealing.

On my blog () someone pointed out that the image looks like the view from the Gran Paradiso Hotel in Ischia, an island in the Gulf of Naples (http://www.hotelgranparadisoischia.it/).
A better name based on the images would have been Ischia or Amalfi.
I mean, with Bon Echo you made a skull, which is completely different from the national park, and it’s ok, you see it’s something different. But with this, people knows that FF codenames are after name of places, and start thinking that Gran Paradiso is the typical Italian place: Sea, sun, pizza, mandolino, pomodoro… it’s sad that Italy is know only by these stereotypes :-(

Well, I don’t want to make it too big but it is like calling a software “New York” then paint it like “Los Angeles” and say “this is our fictional New York”.
Or even worse, to use the London Tower for a place in Ireland… I hope you get it.

Back to the matter at hand, I got it (the browser) and I’m stretching it thoroughly.
