The T-Shirt History of Mozilla

As anyone who’s spent much time around the Mozilla community knows, t-shirts are an incredibly important part of our culture. So, when Mary showed me a stack of classic shirts she’d collected from Mitchell, chofmann, Myk and others, I thought it would be fun to document all the Mozilla t-shirts throughout the years (with a few Netscape ones thrown in for historical context).

After some detective work, here are the 53 shirts I’ve collected so far (arranged in rough chronological order so you can see the progression):
A T-Shirt History of Mozilla (6.4.08 version)

If you want to see them up close, I’ve created a Flickr set of all the images. I’m quite sure that there are plenty of shirts I missed, so if you have one that’s not pictured here please let me know. I’d like this to be as comprehensive as possible.

This is sure to be a constantly evolving thing…I know of at least four new shirts currently in development that will have to be added soon. So, enjoy this little look back through Mozilla history and stay tuned for future updates.

Having filed bug 385513, obviously I think that this blogpost, the Flickr material and all the work that must have gone into both are absolutely awesome. Huge kudos to you, John. Keep it coming! :-)

Looks like there’s one from the hack series missing:

I got mine at the San Diego Open Source Conference summer 2001. I think they were being handed out at one event following that.

Is the Mozilla Europe T-shirt the evil launch staff one? If so, you should have taken the backside ;-)

@Gijs – Thanks! I appreciate that. Btw, the result of your ‘old school’ shirt request in bug 385513 is that “Mozilla 10 years” shirt towards the top of the t-shirt collage graphic. We’ll be making it available in a few weeks for people who donate to the Mozilla Foundation…stay tuned for more details.

@Andyed – Great shirt! If you still have easy access to it, would you be able to take a picture of it laying flat on a table? I’d love to add it to the group.

@Paul – That sounds ambitious!

@Alex – Good tip, thanks.

@Axel – If I recall correctly, that Mozilla Europe shirt didn’t have anything on the back. Maybe it’s a different one? If you have the ‘evil’ version handy, send me a picture!

I see you also added a Mozillaitalia T-Shirt. Are you interested in other l10n team T-Shirts? I have the French one, and I think we sent one or two of them to Mountain View a few years ago :)

Not counting the Netscape ones (too many of them :) here’s the ones you are missing and that I know of:
- Mozilla FOSDEM “PacMan” T-shirt (I think it’s 2002, not sure)
- Mozilla “Hack” T-shirt with just the Mozilla Star and a catchphrase (How many versions exists? I’ll have to check but I’m not sure mine has the same text as Andyed’s)
- Mozilla Tech Evang “RESOLVED FIXED” made for Mozilla 1.0 (see http://users.skynet.be/osga/photos/fosdem-2004/fosdem-02-2004-02.jpg)
- Black/White (and White/Black) Mozilla Europe t-shirt (http://144233.spreadshirt.net/fr/FR/Shop/Article/Index/article/Mozilla-Europe-noir-3264620)
- Firefox Paris 2 Launch Party, the white one

If I’m not mistaken, only the back of The Mozilla Europe “Staff” T-shirt differs from yours, it says “Launch Staff”.

I have one you don’t have, and can remember another.

I have a standard black t-shirt with Dino head and “mozilla” in white. Available from the store, I think.

There was also a Mozilla Europe “Pacman”-style shirt.

My “hack” t-shirt was stolen in Feb 2006 along with the rest of my luggage in the railway station in Brussels :-(

@Benoit – I’d love to include other l10n t-shirts…if you have any, please send me some photos if it’s not too much trouble.

@Brian – thanks!

@Mat – I added a picture of the star Hack shirt today, but am still missing all the others you mentioned. Any chance you could send pictures?

Thanks to everyone who’s viewed or commented on this photo/post…it’s been a fun project. I’ll keep collecting more photos and will post an update in a few weeks.
