Mozilla Creative Collective Logo, Round 2: More Input Needed!
As I’ve noted before, we’re conducting the logo design process for the Mozilla Creative Collective in the open, and your feedback in response to round 1 was extremely helpful. I wrote a more detailed summary in an earlier post, but the two main points that came across in the 70+ comments were that the logos needed a broader and better color palette, and that they should emphasize the “creative” portion of the equation more than the “collective” side.
So, with all that in mind, Studio Number One began iterating and they’ve come back with five new directions (with multiple options for each) for round two. You’ll see a wider range of colors this time, and more emphasis on the friendly, optimistic and creative sense of community we want to convey.
I have my own opinions and favorites, but please take a look and share your own thoughts in the comments section by Friday, March 20 (for more details about why we need this or what it’ll be used for see my original post).
Like before, there are some explanatory notes from Studio Number One down at the bottom. Looking forward to hearing from you!
Notes from Studio Number One:
Comp 1: Evolution of the circular lockup that was chosen, incorporating the banner, adding flourishes, paint brushes and rays to break out of the circle shape.
Comp 2: This is a new direction that plays more on the Creative aspect. The mark has a hand drawn feel to it, but is contained within a shape that’s clean.
Comp 3: Evolution of the circle lockup with an alternate flourish from comp 5.
Comp 4: We know you didn’t specifically ask for an exploration of the shield, but we felt this holding shape had the opportunity to accomplish some of the things that were asked: looking more polished, 3D including the dino head, subtle constructivist feel, the mark of a team or a collective.
Comp 5: Evolution of the circle lockup adding flourishes to and silhouettes of the dino head to break the perfect circle shape. It can either work within an octagon or stand alone.

These look great! My personal favorite is number 1. I really like the overall style and color palette which give it a classic vintage feel. I would probably take away the paint brushes and tidy up the outline of the logo a bit so it’s more compact and could fit in a variety of spaces. Otherwise, I think it’s the strongest direction. There’s something really cool about #2 as well, but it’s not quite right for this logo.
Exciting!

#5 – Mozilla is one of the stations from the Dharma Initiative!
March 18th, 2009 at 5:58 pm
The logos look great I like the # 4 set.
March 18th, 2009 at 6:20 pm
Love them. Particularly 1 though. Quite amazing. Maybe something different in the centre? It seems rather out of place, the dinosaur head right in the middle of things…
March 18th, 2009 at 6:24 pm
#4 looks great for me, but #1 has the best message (it’s CREATIVE collective)
March 18th, 2009 at 6:25 pm
Love #4. It looks so much cleaner and very polished.
March 18th, 2009 at 6:26 pm
great logos… but the #5 it’s better
March 18th, 2009 at 6:26 pm
I’m loving Comp 2.
March 18th, 2009 at 6:27 pm
I am kind of torn between #1 and #3… #1 being a bit more noticeable… I like the variety of choices on #3, though.
March 18th, 2009 at 6:28 pm
Hmm…it’s a toss up between #1 and #5.
March 18th, 2009 at 6:29 pm
Numbers 1 & 5 are the best of the bunch. For some reason, I prefer the text around the circle rather than in a banner across the logo, making 5 look better overall. But the paintbrushes on 1 are fantastic. Maybe a merger of those two?
2 feels a little too 1960s/hippy, and 4 feels more like a sports team logo.
3 I’m neutral on — similar to 5, but not quite as good.
March 18th, 2009 at 6:29 pm
My personal order of choice:
1; 4; 2; 3; 5
Really like the 1st and then the 4th options. Number 2 is cool but 3 and 5 just don’t do it for me.
And although I prefer the 1st I’m not really sure about the brushes behind.
March 18th, 2009 at 6:33 pm
42135 that’s my favorite from first to last.
March 18th, 2009 at 6:36 pm
#2 and #4 both look fantastic. I’m not a fan of the more floral patterns. #2 would also make for some excellent stickers. The shields look great too and I agree they have a team feel about them.
March 18th, 2009 at 6:46 pm
beautiful
March 18th, 2009 at 6:47 pm
Numbers 1 and 4 are the clearest. They both promote the idea of a collective and are both strong, stand-alone pieces. They also give a sense of honor, inclusion, or something earned; a collective to be proud of.
Comps 2, 3, and 5 are more vague. They come off as frames for the dino head rather than statements about MCC.
March 18th, 2009 at 6:49 pm
#2, #3 and #4, but I think #2 brings more the creative thing.
March 18th, 2009 at 6:54 pm
#4 for me
March 18th, 2009 at 6:57 pm
Depends on how much you want to emphasize the dino graphic.
#1 I like the homage to the paint brush and the whole retro feel.
#4 Very Harley Davidson bad boy. I also like the use of MCC.
Either one would be great! Good job guys!
March 18th, 2009 at 7:00 pm
IMO, #2 looks more modern so it goes with the word “creative”.
March 18th, 2009 at 7:02 pm
I prefer #4a but any one of the #4 set is good for me.
March 18th, 2009 at 9:29 pm
I like elements of all of them.
1 seems the most thematically on target but I’m not thrilled with the negative space around Moz’s head.
2 has a sort of 60s poster feel that I dig and goes well with “collective”
but I don’t like the idea of introducing such a fanciful font treatment.
3 & 5 both have a nice central badge, especially 3 because of the extra ring, but the main treatment outside of that feels uninspired and uninspiring to me.
4 is pretty damn gorgeous but I’m not really seeing the “creative collective” in it. The shield really connotes much more “security” or “defense” and might make a fine Firefox Safe Browsing logo
I think 1 has the most upside and the least downside.
I also really like the simplicity of 3 without the petals. Just a clean and simple roundel.

I like them but I’m not amazed. Doesn’t seem to fit with the Firefox / Thunderbird look and feel. Very post WW2 Nazi propaganda style which is nice but doesn’t mix to well with the amazing web 2.0 look and feel of its predecessors. Not to talk down the creative company because I love all of Shepard Fairey’s work, but when a creative company has to explain there work then the logo really hasn’t done its job.
Not to be an ass, just an opinion.

i prefer 4th design

#1 #1 #1 #1 #1 #1 #1 #1 !!!!!!
March 18th, 2009 at 10:53 pm
1. Definitely 1.
I would be SO proud to show that logo off wherever I go.
March 18th, 2009 at 11:59 pm
#1 and #4 are great for me..
March 19th, 2009 at 12:12 am
I like the direction, but find that they are too stylised and busy. I really think it needs to be paired back some more, to reflect the simplicity of the mozilla mexico logo for example.
March 19th, 2009 at 1:42 am
I prefer 4 D !
Find all logos in group 4 very cool
March 19th, 2009 at 3:00 am
Number 1.
March 19th, 2009 at 3:24 am
2 and 5 are my favourites.
March 19th, 2009 at 4:43 am
My choice is #2!
It seems to me that #1 is too fancy, although it’s pretty nice. #2 has a more retro look, and would be an excellent choice for a sticker!
March 19th, 2009 at 5:27 am
No. 1
March 19th, 2009 at 6:51 am
definitely number 2!
great job with the logos, they all look great
March 19th, 2009 at 3:01 pm
Really digg #1 and #4, but I think I like 1 better than the rest. Just something about it being so simple, and the brushes really add to the creative.
March 19th, 2009 at 3:55 pm
Most of these look like awesome logos for a sack of flour!
March 19th, 2009 at 6:30 pm
Wow, these are such an improvement.
My pick: #1. I just love it.
I have to agree with Asa on #4, it’s gorgeous, but it would match some other Mozilla group better.
I like the versatility of #5 and #3.
The style from #2 could work, though I’d go with the star instead of the two smaller heads.

Having not read any of the other comments, I would like to start off by saying that blue is definitely what was missing from all of the red/black color palettes from the last round. It is a perfect complement to the dino head.
With that said, here’s my more specific critique:
1) This seems like a very Mozilla-y logo. It kinda jives with the current Mozilla.com design… or maybe Apple’s MobileMe cloud. I’m not sure. But it looks nice. One thing I’d like to mention is that the tan-colored outline (1B) looks better, but I don’t think the layout should be dragging around a black box everywhere it goes, so the light-background one (1A) could be a valid alternative.
2) I like this one, especially 2A, because of the blue. 2C and 2D are dancing around another perfect complementary color. However, I personally don’t like the hand-drawn-ness of the type, nor the fact that the two L’s are on top of each other.
3) These are also very nice. I like 3C and 3B. 3D is way too red and black. 3A is kinda dull, color-wise. I don’t think the dino head is big enough, in proportion to the size of this logo, though.
4) These shields are much better than those of the first round, but I can’t figure out which one I like the best. I think I’m leaning towards 4D. 4A is probably my least favorite. But it’s tough to decide.
5) I don’t know about these. For 5A and 5C, the color is definitely wrong. (I’m seeing it as orange; if it’s supposed to be the same color as the dino head, then it’s even worse.) I think the blue in 5B and 5D is much better. However, I don’t think having an octagonal shape (associated with a stop sign, after all), as in 5A and 5B, is a good idea. A similar association is present in 5C and 5C, but it’s more diluted. Overall, though, the flourishes do not add as much as they detract.
I feel like these comments are less helpful than those I offered in the first round, but that may be because I’m much less negative in them. But anyway… the more I look at 1A and 1B, the more I see the MCC logo going in that direction. (Not that I’m necessarily making that suggestion.)

I like #1 best, followed closely by #3 and #5, but I really don’t find any really points to criticize there.
#2 seems hardly readable, #4 looks more like a race car team than a creative collective to me.
March 20th, 2009 at 12:55 pm
I like the first and the second ones. The second feels more “artistic”. I think it will look good on a t-shirt.

#4 – Published under the shield it shows strength, security and colours are timeless!
