"Like many in the left, "
Pffft.
"I simply view him as a conservative with a brain capable of critical thinking, writing, and some common sense."
To me this comes under the heading "conservatism cannot fail, it can only be failed". Markos is an ex-conservative. He may not subscribe to some of the sillier aspects of the US left such as hairstyle, clothing, speech patterns, methods of political action and pathologically anti-rational philosophies, but that doesn't mean his views are not left-wing. Compared with any member of the senate I can think of save Bernie Sanders he's to the left. I'd be interested in links to opinions of his that indicate otherwise.

For the US left to be revived, it needs to change from a sociologists' wistful club to a rationalist, progressive force supplying policy and pressing for it's implementation.

That is the process Markos has been party to starting.

Conservatism is only a rational view for the upper classes.

"plus also too: Markos is a conservative? um…okay"

Not knocking that fact. If you haven't noticed, a large part of the Democratic party base (and the Kossack community) is now made up of moderate conservatives. Markos was self-admittedly a Reagan Republican with a libertarian bent. (Read this: http://www.cato-unbound.org/2006/10/02/markos-moulitsas/the-case-for-the-libertarian-democrat/ )

Simply having a few social issues where you support the moderate liberal view does not make you a liberal. No more than my having moderate views of fiscal restraint would make me conservative. That just makes me a moderate liberal.

It is a big part of why Markos has been so instrumental in pulling over many of the moderate voters to the Democratic party.

And Markos is not to be confused with the kind of modern day GOP that claim to be moderate conservatives or even Reagan Republicans but are just outright far right wing nutty, Christianists, neoconservative/neoliberal/Jacobins or just about anything but "conservative". Those voters and politicians that are out there on the right wing are another big part of the reason moderate conservatives are moving to the left side. They like to deal in reality.

speaking as a long-term Kossack, I can't wait to see DK4, especially the idea of being able to create groups onsite.

I was really happy to see the Digg and Twitter integration, and was just thinking that I wish someone could devote time to just digging key recurring threads, like 'I Got The News Today' which honors the fallen.

Great work, Kos! and thanks for doing this, John.

"Moulitsas evokes strong feelings among people who follow U.S. politics: to those on the left, he’s a hero"

Ummm? No. To some on the left he may be. To most on the left he is a Reagan Republican that turned away from his party, started a decent Blog with some astute commentary that, also, allowed others to comment and build a community. In this way he is a pretty smart businessman. A hero of the left? He is barely left himself.

I am not saying any of that is a bad thing.

the kind of changes Markos is talking about for DK4 are a huge risk. Kudos for being a risk-taker and staying innovative.
